Patch Picks: Weathering the Storm

Indoor fun amidst Hurricane Irene's visit

is holding a back-to-school fashion show for the entire family to enjoy this Saturday. Come down to the court located on the upper level for a fashion-filled afternoon that'll showcase all the "in" looks for this school season. To top of all that excitement, Nathan Kress who is otherwise known as "Freddie" in Nickelodeon's hit television show iCarly will be in attendance.

If new school clothes won't get to your children to the mall, Kress certainly will. After the fashion show wraps up, you'll have the opportunity for a Meet & Greet which includes autographs and upclose and personal interaction with the star. Running now for your viewing pleasure include family-friendly favorites such as "Spy Kids: All The Time in the World" (PG)," Glee: the 3D Concert Movie" (PG) and "The Smurfs" (PG). For the older kids, hit movies like "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" (PG-13) is still in theatres now through the weekend. Other highly-anticipated flicks on the big screen right now are "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (PG-13), "Captain America: The First Avenger" (PG-13), "Cowboys and Aliens" (PG-13) and "The Help" (PG-13). All shows starting before 6 p.m. have a reduced admission price; adults, children 11 years old and younger and Senior Citizens are $7.50 (not including 3D features). SportsCenter of Connecticut located at 784 River Road in Shelton is packing your weekend full of fun and games to keep from cabin fever. Don't stress the rain with all the options SportsCenter has for your children this weekend. Gear your kids up for Extreme Lazer Tag on the second floor of the rinks. Your children will be able to venture around a jungle setting fully equipped with seriously kid approved decor including fog, trees, rock formations and a helicopter. Yale Peabody Museum located at 170 Whitney Ave. in New Haven has a handful of temporary exhibits on display that can surely educate and entertain this weekend. "Invasion of the Bloodsuckers: Bedbugs and Beyond," is currently being featured at the museum.You and your children can go back in time and trace their evolution and history. Spend a few hours learning about critters such as lice, bedbugs, mosquitoes, fleas and other bloodsucking arthropods through a family-friendly media display which includes models, film footage, interactive displays and living and preserved specimens. Also on temporary display is "X-Ray Vision: Inside and Out," an interactive learning exhibit where visitors can see over 40 black and white digital prints of a variety of fish specimens. Take a tour with sequential x-rays that have helped scientists at the Smithsonian study fish in further depth and learn about the enormous varieties of fish species. Permanent attractions at Yale Peabody Museum include Hall of Native American Cultures, Hall of Mammalian Evolution, The Discovery Room, Daily Life in Ancient Egypt, Birds of Connecticut and tons more.
