Trumbull Self-Storage Business Back on Track

The developer of the site, at 6 Cutlers Farm Road, ran into financial problems. He said the new facility will be business-friendly and have a coffee bar and wifi in addition to climate-controlled storage units.

Trumbull Self Storage is poised to begin construction at 6 Cutlers Farm Road soon after closing on a loan, the developer's lawyer said recently.

The Planning and Zoning Commission recently approved an extension of the permit, after approving the business in May 2010. The builder ran into problems securing funding after the business was approved.

"Things are going to move real quick," said Matthew Romano, a former born-and-raised Trumbull resident who proposed the business. Speaking on Tuesday, he anticipates opening in the first quarter of 2014. He said he hopes the ride the popularity wave of such shows as "Storage Wars."

"We're excited," he added.

The struggle to get to this point has been 8 1/2 years, said Romano, who bought the property in 2004. After going through zoning hearings to get approval, the effects of the bad economy stalled the project shortly afterward.

Now with money in hand, Romano, a marketer by trade, hopes to engage the community with his business.

The new facility will stand out from other self-storage businesses, complete with a sheltered loading area, a business-friendly, decorated waiting room with wifi and a coffee bar, Romano said.

"We want to make it a little different," according to the marketer.

He added that he hopes to make it a destination for business meetings.

Since posting his telephone number online, Romano said he has received dozens of calls, especially from area college students who want to store their possessions locally, rather than in a city facility.

He also envisions businesses storing their samples and equipment.

According to its Website, the facility:

  • "Will provide clean, safe and secure self storage to the under served residential and  business market in Trumbull, CT."
  • "Will manage over 350 climate controlled and drive-up units ranging from 5'x5' up to 10'x30' sized units with over-sized elevators for your convenience."

His brother, Keith Romano, rents out storage garages on Spring Hill Road, Matthew Romano said.
