Local Author to Speak on the Battle of Gettysburg

Listen to the stories and experiences of those who witnessed and fought at the Battle of Gettysburg with Kevin Drake. The 150th Anniversary will take place next summer.

Last spring we kicked off the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a series of programs focusing on Connecticut’s Civil War history in partnership with the Trumbull Library. Here at the Trumbull Historical Society we are continuing to bring attention to War and the Trumbull soldiers who fought for their country. Next summer citizens across the country will be remembering one of the most written about battles in American History: the Battle of Gettysburg. The anniversary will take place July 1st through the 3rd, 2012, where thousands will flock to the town of Gettysburg to participate in the many events the town has planned.

Does Trumbull have a tie? Connecticut regiments and Trumbull soldiers were present at the great Battle. Trumbull’s first volunteer, Henry B. Curtiss, who fought in more battles than any other Trumbull soldier, fought and survived. We can’t help but wonder what this experience was like for these men, some newly recruited and others, like Curtiss, harden veterans by the age of 23. And what about the citizens of Gettysburg, who, as civilians, had not experienced the horrors of battle until the two armies collided so close to their homes.

Author and Trumbull resident Kevin Drake has spent time gathering stories and research which focus on the personal experiences of the soldiers who fought during the 3 day Battle, as well as those living in Gettysburg at the time. When I first met Drake, he told me he always likes to ask his audience, “What if it had been the Battle of Trumbull?” Drake will help us understand the experiences of the soldier and civilians of Gettysburg through a series of human interest stories at the Trumbull Historical Society on November 18th.
