At 106, It's Time for a Rest

Elizabeth Veres of Stern Village, Trumbull, is taking well-deserved break these days.

Veres turned 106 on Sept. 13 and is the oldest person in Stern Village, a subsidized housing complex for the elderly and disabled on Hedgehog Circle. She lives with her daughter, 85-year-old Elizabeth "Mattie" Csire.

Junior Girl Scouts from the Frenchtown School Troop 36275 sang to her Friday while residents and Stern Village Executive Director Harriet Polansky gave Veres flowers.

"We're so happy to have you here," Polansky told her.

"I got the most beautiful people here," Veres said. Csire, who has two children and two grandchildren, is Veres' only child. All the grandchildren and children called or visited Friday.

She said she hoped to see 107, but joked, "I don't promise."

Today, she spends time eating, sleeping and resting.

The next oldest Stern Village resident is 100, Polansky said.
