Sen. Murphy Visits St. Vincent's to Study Privatizing Services

Chris Murphy said he would try to find to money to help build a therapy pool at St. Vincent's Special Needs Services on Merritt Boulevard. The plan must also be approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Chris Murphy chatted with St. Vincent's Special Needs President Ray Baldwin Jr. and staff Thursday as he toured the facility. He said he was studying private facilities as the state attempts to turn some services private.

St. Vincent's serves "profoundly" disabled people by offering schooling at 95 Merritt Boulevard and housing in group homes around the state. It was founded in 1955 and is funded by the state Department of Children and Families and the state Department of Developmental Services.

School districts also pay to send some of their disabled students there.
