Yep, July Was a Scorcher

Your instincts are right, July 2013 was the hottest ever in Connecticut, weather experts report.

We've had an unusually cool start to August but the heat of July is still burned into our collective memories.

It's also burned into the record books as the National Weather Service confirms that the July 2013 was the hottest ever in Connecticut.

"The average temperature was 77.9, and the next-hottest July was 77.1 degrees set in 2010," Rebecca Gould, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Boston office told the Connecticut Post.

The NWS used recording stations from around the state to come to that conclusion, including ones in Hartford, Bridgeport and Middletown. Those stations recorded some of the hottest average July temperatures since the late 1800s, Gould said.

But while the state suffered through a heat wave in July that saw temperatures soar into the high 90s for several days, we hit triple digits in only a few times in isolated areas, the Post reports.

Still, the heat this July ended up being one for the record books because of how warm things stayed at night. Evening temperatures for many nights this past July fell only into the 70s.

"At Bradley, we had 17 out of the 31 days where the temperature never dropped below 70," Quincy Vagell, a meteorologist with WTNH Channel 8 in New Haven told the Post. "That's unprecedented."
