The Life and Legacy of P.T. Barnum

Kathleen Maher, Executive Director and Curator of the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport will discuss the life of P.T. Barnum and his influence on Connecticut's cultural heritage, as well as how the museum, opened in 1893, represents his legacy. Maher is currently heading up the effort to restore the museum after it was damaged in the 2010 tornado. Additionally, she is campaigning to have the 1893 building added as a National Historic Landmark.

"Barnum made Bridgeport his adopted home and ultimately became the primary engineer of the city’s prosperous industrial age. An entrepreneur, Bridgeport Mayor, Connecticut legislator, urban developer, community benefactor, philanthropist, abolitionist, lecturer, and author, Barnum was committed to the intellectual and cultural development of society and was fundamental in transforming the world of entertainment, defining his legacy with the “Greatest Show On Earth.” Even today, more than one hundred years after his death, Barnum’s name is recognized the world over, earning him a place as one of America’s greatest national icons." -The Barnum Museum
