Trumbull Residents to Perform Symphony Opener

The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra is kicking off its 50th season.

THE GREATER BRIDGEPORT YOUTH ORCHESTRAS (GBYO) TO OPEN THE 2011-12 SEASON, CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MUSIC AND YOUTH, NOV. 20, 3 P.M. AT BRIDGEPORT'S KLEIN AUDITORIUM: The Concert will feature works by Brahms, Dvorák, Massenet, Rossini, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, and more.

The following Trumbull residents will perform: Rachel Brake, Madeleine Dehm, Ethan Friedson, Shira Friedson, Sean Kim, Christina Lane, Annie Lane, Eunji Lee, Roger Lo, Larissa Mark, Michelle Martire, Nailen Matschke, Kristian Anso Michel, Ishan Negi, Vishakha Negi, Nikaash Pasnoori, Julian Shively, Alison Shively, Lauren Smith, Ari Stelman, Joseph Vellardito, Benjamin Vu, Stephanie Vu, Stephen Wong, Maxwell Wu, Alexander Zhang and Sophia Zhang.

"Christopher Hisey, Music Director for the organization, conducts the Principal Orchestra in Antonin Dvorák’sSymphony No. 9 “From the New World” and the ever-popular Overture to “William Tell” by Gioachino Rossini.  Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Carrie Mascaro, will perform March Militaire Francaisefrom the "Algerian Suite" by Camille Saint-Saens, Brahms’ First Symphony Movement IV, and An American Rhapsody by Richard Meyer.  Jeff Albright will lead the Concert Orchestra in Overture to "Barber of Seville"by Rossini, Hopak from "Sorochinsky Fair" by Modest Mussorgsky, Meditation from "Thais" by Jules Massenet, and Rakoczy March Hungarian Melody. The String Orchestra, conducted by Erica Messina, will present 1812 Overture   by Tchaikovsky, Fiddle and Stomp by James "Red" McLeod and Postcards From Russia arranged by Carrie Lane Gruselle.  Aaron Barkon will lead the Wind Ensemble in Aztec Fire by Jay Bocook, Danny Boy, arranged by. Warren Barker, and The Incredibles, by Michael Giacchino.  The conductors are assisted by coaches, Enkelejda Hasani, Darilyn Manring, Brian Miller, Bruce Sloat, Roger Thulin, and Jennifer Trahan.

Founded in 1961 the GBYO, with four developmentally sequential orchestras and the Wind Ensemble, offers one of the finest musical experiences for young musicians in the area. .The 230+ members in the five ensembles were chosen by competitive auditions in early fall and have been rehearsing since September in preparation for this concert. The members, in grades 4-12, reside in 28 communities in Fairfield and New Haven Counties. In addition to the three regular family concerts, the GBYO plans to acknowledge their 50 years with additional events including a gala alumni concert, a side-by-side with the Greater Bridgeport Symphony and a European trip to Germany and Austria."

Tickets for the Nov. 20 concert are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the Klein Auditorium after 2 p.m. on the day of performance or by contacting the GBYO Executive Director, Barbara Upton at 203-459-4249.
