THS Auditorium Named After Former Principal

Trumbull High School's auditorium will have a familiar name to THS alumni: former THS Principal Robert McCarthy.

The honor comes from a committee including First Selectman Tim Herbst, Judge of Probate T.R. Rowe, THS C-House Principal Lucinda Timpanelli, THS World Languages Department Chair Nicandra Perusi, TECEC Coordinator Matthew Wheeler, Parent Linda Bartolucci and THS students Alexa Bragg and Kunal Jhaveri.

Board of Education Vice Chairwoman Deborah Herbst said she knew McCarthy for more than 30 years.

"He had an uncanny ability to relate to all kids," she said. "You would never see him at a desk."

"This is a wonderful day for us. We'll miss him," she added.

To board member Rosemary Seaman, he was a mentor, and to Lucinda Timpanelli, he was an example of how to lead.

"Everyone was an equal," she said, adding, "Those students loved him. They confided in him."

Many recalled that he carried peanut bars in his pockets all the time.

"If we could find another Bob McCarthy we would be so lucky," Timpanelli said.

Meanwhile, the board wants to name the family room of the Trumbull Early Childhood Education Center after recently retired Schools Supt. Ralph Iassogna, but Iassogna declined the offer in a letter.

But the board voted to delay that to have further discussions with Iassogna.
