14 CT Towns Supporting Local Veterans with Jobs

Counting down the towns supporting the troops with lives to come home to.

As important as honoring the troops in their missions abroad is supporting them when they return home, helping them obtain a piece of the American Dream they pledged their lives for.

Before we name the most patriotic town in Connecticut, this week Patch is looking at how many able veterans find employment in the civilian world.

The veteran employment rate is based on the number of employed veterans between the ages of 18 and 64 compared to the number of veterans in the local labor force (not counting those on disability or unable to work for other reasons).

Applying the veteran employment rate as a ratio of the same statistic for non-veterans gives a more accurate view of local labor conditions and provides for a better ranking of the towns. A ratio of 1 means veterans and non-veterans have the same employment rate; a ratio above 1 means local veterans are employed at a higher rate than non-veterans.

Of Connecticut’s 169 towns, 98 have ratios of better than 1:1 and 34 have 100 percent veteran employment rates.

Scroll through the list above to view the 14 towns with the highest veteran employment ratios and the 14 lowest ratios below. Find the figures for your zip code using this interactive map.

Also, check back next week when we name the Most Patriotic Towns in Connecticut using the veteran employment ratio as well as data on the number of veterans per capita, tax collection rates, voter turnout and registered voters per capita.
