Marie's Returns to Trumbull

Marie's Sandwich Shop is back and back in the family.

Former Marie's waitress Eda Balonze and her family, who are related to the original owners by marriage, have taken over the business, and it was booming on Friday (Dec. 20).

The phone was ringing off the hook and customers were walking in even as lunch time ended.

The family said they retained some of the previous staff and the original grill cook. The restaurant reopened last Thursday, Dec. 12.

Marie's closed in March, seven years after Kathleen Hallahan bought it. She cited rent and the loss of Porricelli's Food Mart, which closed in early 2013. The original Marie's opened in 1962.

The interior is newly-painted and refurbished, but the menu remains nearly the same, with an assortment of breakfast, lunch and dinner specials.

The restaurant's hours are also similar, from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
