Trumbull Dems: New Economic Platform

The following is a letter to the editor.

Without proper economic development, our residential tax burden will continue to be among the highest of area towns.  Without proper budgeting, businesses will continue to be faced with unpredictable tax rates that, over the past several years, have caused local businesses (and residents) to suffer a 30% increase in personal property taxes.  Trumbull needs better leadership to proactively recruit and retain quality businesses in town and foster an environment that balances the needs of businesses and residents.

Priorities of the Democratic ticket include:

·      Zoning decisions that protect the residential character of neighborhoods, such as South Main Street and the area around P.J.’s Garden Exchange;

·      Implementation of a new Plan of Conservation and Development that maximizes town facility efficiency, increases bike paths and sidewalks, enhances traffic and pedestrian safety and sets our clear tasks and deadlines to make sure that the plans are more than mere words, but are action items that will improve our Town;

·      Preserving and enhancing the use of open space and parks; and

·      A “community center” vision for Trumbull Center, including mixed-use development and connection to the trails.

In 2012, the Grand List grew just under three-quarters of one percent.  Trumbull Center remains underutilized.  Residents increasingly find development encroaching on their backyards. We can, and must, do better.
