Following Stroke at Age 19, Man Becomes Physical Therapy Aide

Patch readers told us who the "Everyday Inspirations" in their communities are, and we're sharing their stories and the work they've done locally.

Everyday Inspirations is a series that features people in Patch communities who inspire others through their work, or people who have faced extraordinary situations and grown from them. They have been featured by other people in the community that have been inspired by the nominees.

Name: Garrett Mendez
Town: Trumbull, CT
Nominated by: Eileen Mendez

Why is this person an "Everyday Inspiration?"
Garrett lives his life to the fullest, helping, supporting and encouraging others. He is kind, compassionate and does all that he can to give back to a community that helped him get through the most difficult challenge of his young life.

Has the nominee's life been changed in an extraordinary way?

Eight years ago at the age of 19, Garrett's life changed in the blink of an eye. He suffered a massive brain stem stroke as a result of a hit in hockey. He was "locked in" on a respirator, unable to se, speak, swallow and was fully paralyzed. We did not know if he would survive.

Eight years later, he has reclaimed his life. He walks with only a slight limp, speaks clearly, drives a modified car. He is taking college courses, has a full time job ice skates and plays golf. He is truly an inspiration to all who meet him.

How does this person work to make others' lives better?

Garrett currently works as a Physical Therapy Aide at Sacred Heart University. He is taking college courses and working towards an associate's degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant.

He shares his story and speaks on behalf of Gaylord Hospital and the American Heart/Stroke Association. He never looks back, never asks why and does all that he can to help and support others. He is an amazing young man.
