Pro-Bono Doula Effort Seeks Funding

The following comes from From Registered Nurse Kylie Nilan.

Thank you for considering making a donation to my cause. As all of you know, I will be graduating from UConn as a Registered Nurse. As some of you may not know, I am also a newly trained Postpartum Doula. "Hm, so what's a postpartum doula?" you might ask.

A postpartum doula is a nonmedical trained professional that offers education, companionship and nonjudgmental support during the postpartum fourth trimester; assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation and light household tidying; and offers evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills for new parents and makes appropriate referrals when necessary." Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily" (DONA, 2005).

It is my honor to specifically serve low-income, single mothers. This subgroup of women cannot afford a doula (between $20-30/hr and typically not covered by insurance or Medicaid) let alone general healthcare or other everyday expenses. Likewise, I cannot afford to work as a doula solely pro-bono. That said, I am asking if you would consider contributing as I proudly start my own pro-bono postpartum support organization. My organization is called "Modern Momma Doula Care." The dollars you contribute will go towards any doula supplies needed to support these women and their infants, such as groceries (I will try to help stock their freezer w/cooked meals), baby supplies (such as a crib, diapers, carrier, or clothing), and other postpartum care costs.

It is my hope to take each woman on at least one shopping trip to a grocery store and the GoodWill for household supplies. In doing this it is my goal that the women I serve, and to whome you contribute, experience a smoother transition into Motherhood with the help of a caring doula like me. Each Mother deserves to know that she has people vying for her and her baby(ies) at this time in her life, and I want her to know that Modern Momma Doula Care is there for her.
Thank you again for listening to my cause!Kylie
