Raising Awareness on Healthy Aging

As we age, a number of health issues come to our attention that we may not have worried about in our younger years. Whether these health issues are for you or someone you love, it's important to learn as much as possible about the health risks that accompany advancing age.

To help seniors have healthy retirement years and to give caregivers way that they can help their loved ones in the retirement years, Griffin Hospital will host “Healthy Aging” on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in the hospital Meditation and Learning Center, 130 Division Street, Derby. Lionel Lim, MD, MPH, medical director of Griffin Hospital’s Geriatric Assessment Center, and Diane Betkoski, MS, RD, LNHA, of Griffin Hospital Lifeline, this free presentation will discuss and answer questions about health issues that develop with aging as well the growing need and challenges associated with caregiving.

Attendees can complete a survey to determine the need for a geriatric assessment and receive free consultation. In addition, each attendee will receive a packet of helpful caregiving resources, including coupons for free Lifeline medical alert activation and a chance to win two free months of Lifeline service (a $180.00 value).

If untreated, health issues such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and bowel and bladder incontinence, sleep problems, poor nutrition or foot troubles can adversely impact the quality of one’s life.

Falls are also a very real concern for older adults. More than 13 million individuals 65 years and older will fall each year, and approximately half of them will not be able to get up after the fall. Every hour, one older adult dies and 183 are treated in the emergency department for fall-related injuries.

Geriatric assessment centers, like the Griffin Hospital’s, provides comprehensive medical assessment and diagnostic services for senior citizens who are experiencing age-related issues, including decline in mental or physical health, memory loss, and frequent falls.

Griffin Hospital Lifeline offers various services such as a fall detection medical alert and a medication dispensing service to help seniors live independently and safely at home.
