Trumbull Resident: Senior Center Decks the Halls

The Trumbull Senior Center was filled with the magic of the holiday season during their Christmas and holiday party recently.

The vibrant and festive doorway was decorated with red bows, evergreen, birds  and pine cone decorations, donated by Trumbull residents, Joanna M. Leone, and her mother Antonetta Leone. Antonetta Leone made poinsettia decorations for the hallway while her brother, Dan Leone contributed the festivities as well.

They said they chose the Trumbull Senior Center to support and contribute to because it's "a place for Seniors to celebrate, participate in a game of bingo and a variety of events."

Leone added, "It is a place for Seniors to gather, chat, share a smile, knit and many other things. The Christmas party felt like being in someone's dining room."

"Their Executive Director, Jean Ferreira, works tirelessly as she manages, coordinates and plans. Her assistant, Sharon always greets people with a smile, no matter how hard she is working," Leone said.

Leone said she always loved Christmas but that she really enjoys seeing the Menorah being lit.  "Seeing the Menorah being lit in between the two Christmas trees added to the holiday spirit," Leone said.

"As a Sponsor of the 'Smile A While' performers at the Senior Center, I must say how proud I am that their performance included something for everyone" during the Christmas party.

Those who attended tap danced, sang Christmas songs from Hawaii and many other classic Christmas songs.

Christmas has a special meaning to the Leone family this year, as it was a special way to donate and contribute as a family.   "We donated with the memory of my late sister, Cyd Leone, in our hearts. It makes the holidays mean so much more. Our donations of Christmas decorations and some of the goodies and gifts are symbolic of our support of their hard work. It is not about us, but about everyone who works and volunteers at the Senior Center."

The "Smile a While" Performers sing and dance at the Trumbull Senior Center and they travel to other homes for the elderly and rehabilitation homes to perform for those who can not go out to see a performance.

Leone said she looks forward to continuing to support the Senior Center.  "Jeanie and Sharon are  easy to work with and they really appreciate the simplest of things. It is a place where everyone in Trumbull and the surrounding communities are welcome. They treat you like family and that is important not just during the holidays, but the whole year through."

"Seeing a lot of smiles, laughter, hearing a few good jokes from the seniors and having conversations with some of the Seniors that day is a wonderful way to spend time," Leone said. "What made the day more special was seeing my mom's long time friends at the Senior Center.   It really was an amazing day."
