GOP: Trumbull Dems Slinging Mud

By Paul Lavoie

Having received both of the political mailers from the Trumbull Democrats and Tom Christiano, I was surprised to see that, once again; the Trumbull Democrats have resorted to personal attacks against Republican candidates.

Leave it to the Trumbull Democrats to take the campaign back down into the mud, just as they did in 2010.  I guess their plan is if you can win on your record and with your vision or policies, just try to win by personally attacking your opponent.

Attacking David Rutigliano for the largest mill rate increase in 30 years is an interesting tactic.  Let’s take a look at what really happened. It was a large mill rate increase because we had a REVALUATION.  People that understand municipal budgets realize that the hard dollars don't ever go down.  When the revaluation was done, the mill rate had to increase to keep the budget dollars whole.  Dave worked hard on our budget and was very critical of every line item on the budget.

By the way, the Democrats on the Board of Finance voted for the largest mill rate increase in the last 30 years as well.  But the Democrats leave out that little fact.   Below is the budget vote from March 13th meeting of the Board of Finance.  This is directly from the minutes.

GRAND TOTAL: $155,249,016

Mr. Lupien moved, seconded by Mr. Tesoro to approve the Grand Total of $155,249,016, as presented.

VOTE: 6–0–0 Motion carries

You see, the Trumbull Democrats led the charge for the largest mill rate increase.  Where is that in their postcard?

Nice job Trumbull Democrats - way to throw your own people under the bus……

I'm sure on November 6th that the voters of Trumbull will once again see through the dirty political tactics of the Democrats.  If fact, I'm counting on them.

It is astonishing at this time when we all need to work together that Mr. LaVoie, who should know better, leads the TRTC charge calling Democratic Tactic "dirty". To make matters worse, he uses a procedural process where Mr. Lupien moves an item and I seconded it as some sort of "proof" that Democrats "led the charge" on the mil rate increase. As anyone with the slightest understanding of the voting process will tell you, who moves or seconds something means nothing, it is the process by which discussion begins and nothing more. To imply that it is more than that is quite frankly sad from a man who should know better. The mil rate that all of us approved was the mil rate that resulted from Reopublican spending proposals, was ratifed by the Republican Town Council and, as such, was in all respects aRepublican proposal. Remember, it is these same Republicans who want you to believe thay are "fiscal conservatives", tough on spending etc. They control the First Selectman's office, they (at the time) had a majority on the Board of Finance, and completely control the Town Council. So please, don't blame the Democrats for your own actions. I have two suggestions for Mr. LaVoie, first, own up to your Party'a responsibility and actions and second, be honest with the pulic in your comments. By attempting to use procedural actions that mean nothing as "proof" you reduce your arguements to the absurd. Tom Tesoro Democrat, Board of Finance

Read my first line Charlie, it is astonishing that anyone would bring up this nonsense at this time.

Ridiculous that the person writing this "opinion piece" could accuse Democrats or anyone else of mudslinging!

Why did Rutigliano, in the same cited minutes, abstain on the education line item?
Paul Lavoie November 07, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Tom, I am happy to own up to my parties actions - all the time. I voted for the budget and associated mill rate increase. If you believe that the mailer charging Dave with the largest mil rate increase in 30 years is truthful, then so be it. My letter was highlighting the campaign tactic of the Trumbull Democrats and I'm disappointed to know that you would support those campaign tactics towards Dave.
