Man Charged With Carrying Machete; Mom Arrested Too

Clean Up Leads to Arrest

John Silano, 37, of Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, is charged with second-degree breach of the peace and carrying a dangerous weapon.

Police said Silano had a machete strapped to his waist and was seen dumping brush on public property. He had been warned about the machete, police added. It's illegal to carry a knife with a blade of more than four inches long.

When confronted, Silano was reportedly uncooperative and his mother allegedly interfered as officers tried to arrest him. Angela Silano, 68, of Vazzano Place, is charged with interfering with police and breach of the peace.

The man's bond was set at $1,000 and his mother's at $2,500.

Man With Leaf Blower Accused of Road Rage

John Jeffrey Topolski, 58, of Stonehouse Road, Trumbull, is accused of confronting a driver passing by his home.

Topolski is charged with second-degree breach of the peace and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Police said he was using his leafblower when walked toward a passing car that he thought was speeding.

He is free on a written promise to appear in court.

New Yorker Charged with Shoplifting

Abdu Basit Bassa, 25, of the Bronx, N.Y., is accused of trying to buy goods at Lord & Taylor in the Westfield Trumbull Mall using reportedly stolen credit cards.

Bassa is charged with fifth-degree larceny, illegal use of a credit card, intefering with police and conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny.

Police said he purchased items including two leather jackets and two Bulova Watches and handed them to an accomplice. The accomplice dropped the items and fled.

The merchandise, in separate purchases, was worth $1,340 and $943.

His bond was set at $7,500.
