Trumbull Cops Unveil Design for Dispatch Center

The Police Department's Dispatch Center can't be upgraded anymore.

So the department is proposing renovating the center to include Fire Department dispatching and possibly EMS.

"Basically we're staying in the same footprint of the existing building," said Police Chief Thomas Kiely.

He said the Emergency Center has had no improvements in 33 years.

The proposal, approved by the Board of Finance and awaiting approval from the Town Council, includes:

o 4 stations and wrap-around screens for easier monitoring and work stations.

o Updated computers and records management.

o "Monitoring video feeds, i.e., we will be able pick up the THS Admin building at the BOE and  be able to scan the rooms as police are searching for an intruder."

o New furniture-desks, chairs, file cabinets, cubicles.

o Must be able to lock down the Communications area; need a communications supervisor.

o Sergeant’s office and evidence office in use 24/7.

o Accessible restrooms; unisex and handicap

o Records room and storage.

o Interview room – must have new one by January 1, 2014; need to video all interviews and confessions; grant funds are paying for all video equipment.

o Fire dispatch is moving out during the renovations to temporary location and will move back once completed.

o EMS System can be brought in to the dispatch center.

The proposal comes at the same time as the conclusion of a study by town emergency officials recommending combining dispatching, which would also save the town money.

The proposed upgraded radio system would also increase the radio coverage around town, especially at the Westfield Trumbull Mall.

The Board of Finance supported the proposal but sought to get the most value for price.

"I'm just trying to figure out the best way to pay for it," said board member Paul Lavoie.

The Finance board approved $2.9 million for the upgrades and renovation planning. Kiely will have to return to the Board for further funds when the department has more "solid numbers."
