Brayan Ramirez, 24, of Prayer Spring Road, Stratford, is charged with two counts each of second-degree forgery and sixth-degree larceny.
Police said Ramirez took a check from a home where he was staying with a friend on April 15. He then cashed the check, but later tried to return the money, police said.
The homeowner discovered the theft when the bank said the account was overdrawn, according to police.
Ramirez's bond was set at $1,000 for an appearance in Bridgeport Superior Court.
