Trumbull Cops on Guard in Wake of Newtown Shooting

Trumbull shares a border with Monroe, which borders on Newtown.

Trumbull Schools Supt. Ralph Iassogna has issued the following:

As you probably are aware, a serious shooting incident has occurred in Newtown. TPS have been in close contact with our Police Department. Until reports are received that confirm the specific status of the situation and its potential impact on our schools, please note that since 10:15 a.m. our schools have been on alert, with no outside activities, and, as a precautionary measure, the TPD have marked and un-marked cars in all school areas. When additional confirmed information is received, I will update you.

Trumbull had a scare earlier this year when Frenchtown School was locked down following a shooting on Old Town Road near Bridgeport. No one was shot in that incident, which involved a Bridgeport and State Police and FBI warrant sweep.

Friday afternoon, Iassogna issued another statement:

Today is truly a sad day in Connecticut! Our thoughts and prayers are with Newtown Public Schools’ students, staff, parents and community.  Words cannot express how catastrophic and deplorable this unconscionable incident truly was.

Although the situation is contained, its magnitude is unknown.  Related, I am cancelling all after school and evening activities for Friday, December 14th with one exception:  the THS Girls away Basketball game at New Canaan.

Thank you.

First Selectman Tim Herbst tweeted:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Newtown and the families affected. May God give them strength as they deal with this tragedy."
