As two new economic development officials start their jobs this month, First Selectman Tim Herbst has released his ideas for the town's .
The plan was upated in 2006 and prior to that in 1984.
"This revision needs to acknowledge that with a town that is 98 percent developed we're gong to have to look at re-adaptive uses, revitalization of existing zones, areas that are underutilized and come up with a long term strategic plan for specific areas of town," he said.
He called for specific visions for specific areas such as Merritt Boulevard, Reservoir Avenue, Lindeman Drive, Trumbull Center and the .
The mall has purchased properties along Main Street and may try to close down the roads they sit on.
Any plan should "serve as a blueprint for the applicant," he added.
Herbst said the area around Town Hall should also have a plan. He noted that he approves of a new doctor's office opening up near Town Hall.
Then he addressed Long Hill Green, for which mixed-use plans have been approved. Although construction has not started yet, the developers have said the project will move forward.
The area has become commercial little by little on a case-by-case basis, Herbst said.

The first selectman said everything should be updated, such as the sites designated industrial 40 years ago. The Planning and Zoning Commission should review that status, according to Herbst.
The commission will be interviewing companies to assist in rewriting the Plan of Conservation and Development. Four groups have answered the town's advertising.
Finally, he called for addressing the Rails to Trails paths, which connect Newtown to Bridgeport.
Meanwhile, will start his job as Economic and Community Development Director, and as the town’s new Director of Planning & Development.
He has said both have ideas for moving the town's development forward.
