Work Zone Safety Mascot Gets a Name

After voting through social media, the public has chosen a name for the state Department of Transportation's new orange work zone safety mascot.

The public has spoken and the winner is "Work Zone Wally."

The state Department of Transportation announced the new name of its orange work zone safety mascot Monday, chosen by the public through voting on Facebook and Twitter.

In September, the department kicked off the campaign to name the mascot  with the goal of getting the message out that safety in work zones is a serious issue.

Almost 100 names were nominated, according to a press release sent by the department, and after that field was narrowed down to six, voting commenced on both social networks.

“Every mascot deserves a name, and we were so happy with the public’s enthusiasm and response to this campaign,” said Terri Thompson, Transportation Supervising Engineer for the CT Department of Transportation. “This campaign was a fun way to get the message out, but make no mistake that this is a very serious matter. Every life counts in Connecticut, and we are dedicated to providing the public with comprehensive information to improve motorist, worker and pedestrian safety in roadway work zones.”

"Work Zone Wally" is featured at safety events throughout the state and on the CT Work Zone Safety Facebook page. The person who suggested the name was rewarded with a CT Work Zone Safety prize pack.
