JUST DRIVE IN – DROP OFF – DRIVE OUT

No questions asked.  The intent is to discard expired and unwanted prescriptions and OTC drugs, vitamins, etc. safely and without hurting the environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS: - Not knowing what to do with expired prescriptions and OTC drugs,  for years people were advised to flush their unused meds. down the toilet.  Then the recommendation shifted to combining the meds with substances like kitty litter or coffee grounds and throwing them in the trash. But that led to concerns that water contamination could still occur, as materials leach out of landfills and enter underground water tables

ANOTHER MAJOR CONCERN IS PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE AMONG TEENS, which is growing at a staggering rate: * 48% of all E.R. visits for Rx drug abuse are by young people ages  12 – 20, and 70% of young abusers admit getting them from family and friends.

COMMONLY ABUSED OTC & Rx DRUGS INCLUDE:  COLD/COUGH MEDS: Sudafed, Robitussin-DM    Vicks    –    DEPRESSANTS: Nembutal, Xanax, Valium   -   STIMULANTS:  Ritalin, Adderal, Concerta    -   PAINKILLERS:  OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin. (all Reg.TM’s) *CT Dept of Consumer Protection

This community service is being brought to you through the Trumbull Police Dept., countless community partners, such as the Trumbull Rotary, and Trumbull Cares: The First Selectman’s Prevention Council.  Please email the above information to pegperillie@charter.net
