Lecture: New England Cemetery Art

New England is home to some of the oldest and most fascinating burial grounds in the country. With their captivating art and intriguing epitaphs, they have caught the attention of both historians and tourists alike. Connecticut author and professional photographer Christina Eriquez has traveled from Connecticut to Maine photographing and documenting gravestones from a selection of the country’s oldest cemeteries for her new book Our History in Stone: The New England Cemetery Dictionary. She will offer explanations behind the symbolic art commonly found on the gravestones and include a special presentation focusing on the Burial Hill Cemetery in Plymouth, MA in honor of the history of Thanksgiving. Her fantastic photographs display one of the most unique and comprehensive studies of New England Cemetery art. Her book will be available for purchase following the lecture.
