THS Students Post Higher SAT Scores

Trumbull students perform better than the state average.

The latest SAT test results show Trumbull High School students not only scored better than last year but also are well above the national average in writing, reading and math.

"Scores have gone up and that's great to hear," Board of Education Chairman Edward Lovely said.

The improving Scholastic Assessment Test scores were released during a recent Board of Education meeting held at Trumbull High School.

Trumbull High students scored significantly higher in reading, writing, and math compared to students across nation and the state. The average writing score nationally is 492 out of a possible 800, for all Connecticut students it is 513, with Trumbull students averaging 533.

The students also showed consistent improvement over the past two years, according to the report. Scores in critical reading went up from 512 out of a possible 800 in 2008 to 521 in 2010. Similar scores were found in math and writing, according to the report.

Superintendent of Schools Ralph Iassogna attributes the progress to a dedication by the school to better prepare students for these tests.

"We're pleased that they've shown a significant increase," Iassogna said. "It shows very good progress."

Along with the annual report regarding the latest SAT scores, school officials also released statistics about the universities and colleges attended by Trumbull High School graduates.

In 2010, 93 percent of all students attended a college or university upon graduation, with an increasing number of students being accepted at highly competitive universities across the country.

"Fortunately our students are getting into really good institutions," Iassogna said.

The board was pleased with the results.

"With declining scores occurring, particularly in writing, throughout the country, its nice to hear we are on track," Lovely said.
