Trumbull High School Renovations on Course

The project should be completed by fall 2012.

's renovations could be completed in 20 months, construction officials have said.

"We're on time and on budget for the project. We continue to maintain a surplus," James Nugent, chairman of the Building Committee, told the Town Council. "The auditorium is completed and in use."

The surplus is several million dollars, officials estimated.

Ground was broken for the auditorium in late summer 2009, but the building committee has been meeting since 2006. The next projects will be upgrades to all three houses of the high school and athletic field buildings.

There are several options for athletic building upgrades, officials said. They include: upgrading the existing concession stand; building new field toilets and upgrading the concession stand; and building new field toilets and a concession stand.

Finally, a fourth option is building new field toilets and a concession stand, renovating the existing concession stand and relocating the ticket sales area.

Regarding the auditorium, Town Council Member Tony Scinto asked about a leaky roof.

The problem is with the flashing and the roof leaks only when the wind blows in sideways in heavy rain, officials said. It will be fixed during school break.

The council is still reviewing the options.

Chad Ciocci, R-7, said, "I think this is a rushed decision for us."

James Meisner, D-6, agreed that the council should not decide quickly. "By doing this project right, we'll be enhancing the revenue side of the equation," he said.

Building officials said the all the field buildings need to comply with building codes, whether they're new or renovated.

Chief of Staff Daniel Nelson suggested that the field proposals be returned to committee.

Meanwhile, THS' C House will be renovated first, B house in summer 2011, and A House in summer 2012, officials said.
