As Little League Tournament Rolls On, A Cap Tip to 1989

Trumbull earned the 1989 championship by stunning Taiwan 5-2 in Williamsport, Pa.

The 2013 New England Regional Tournament gets started Friday in Bristol, and while nearby Westport will represent Connecticut in this year's tournament, many around here remember the team that won the World Series title 24 years ago.

Trumbull earned the 1989 championship by stunning Taiwan 5-2 in a nationally-televised game in Williamsport, Pa.

Relics of that title remain, including a photo highlighted in this story. The photo hangs on the wall of the Corner Deli on Main Street, where employee Ana Castellanos said people still take notice.

"People look at it and stare at it sometimes," Castellanos said. "Some people who come in here know the kids. Some people know the families."

Trumbullhistory.org has a detailed review of what happened that summer. It's worth checking out, if only to find out which champion decided to return early from a Cape Cod vacation to play, and which player skipped a California getaway.
