Parent Volunteers THSGEMB's Most Valuable Asset

The 31st Fall Classic Coming Together Thanks to Parents

Parents, you gotta love ‘em. At the Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Marching Band (THSGEMB), we do because without them we wouldn’t be the amazing organization we are today.  Behind every trip, every competition, and every great band or guard member, is a parent working diligently behind the scenes to enable our band to represent both our town and high school with pride, attitude and concentration.

Parents come in all shapes and sizes with different talents and it’s a good thing they do with the variety of jobs that need to be accomplished on any given week during the band season (from the start of band camp in  last two weeks of August to the MAC championships on  November 9th).  Parents are the reason uniforms are ordered on time, medical forms are sent to parents to be filled out,  and ad books for our annual Fall Classic is created. Parents also chaperone practices and competitions, haul equipment for the shows, bake goods to be sold, manage web sites, raise money for trips, make props needed for shows and plan the annual banquet.  The THSGEMB parents volunteer a great deal of time assisting the band in making the season run smoothly; their reward is the smile on their son or daughter’s face while competing on the field and that is just priceless.

One of the main reason the Fall Classic (coming Sept. 28th) is as amazing at it is every year is because the band parents pull together and start working Friday night and all day Saturday to prepare for the 5 pm gate opening.  Parents plan the judges dinner menu, cook for the general audience members, set up tents and tables along with the goods to be sold, man the main gate area, man the parking for the general public and the buses and trucks that will bring the bands competing in this year’s classic. Parents also organize a farewell to our senior band members, a family luncheon on the day of the classic and a luminary the rallies the band and guard members as they head off to their championship night!  There is even a parent who takes pictures of every event.   Whew!

While there are many more jobs that parents do to keep THSGEMB running smoothly, right now the parents are focused on making our upcoming Fall Classic the best yet.  The chairs of the event are working tirelessly to organize, plan and execute a fun time for all as they watch their son or daughter compete on our rejuvenated field at the high school. Parents have signed up to work the classic, while others are baking, ordering needed supplies, painting signs or taking pictures of our seniors.  Preparations are well underway for our 31st annual Fall Classic, and we hope you fine the time to come join us in cheering on the THSGEMB. Bring the family, eat a hot dog and if you see a parent wearing a THSGEMB name tag, share a smile; better yet, share a hug with this amazing group of volunteers.
