Dodgeballing for a Cause

Many came out for a classic game of dodgeball to support the global immunization of polio.

Players of all ages hurled balls at each other for charity recently during the Trumbull Rotary Foundation's third annual Adult Dodgeball Tournament at .

Amongst THS students and graduates and children, residents and team members from the area was former First Selectman Ray Baldwin Jr. who was representing as the captain of the St. Vincent's Special Needs team.

Trumbull Rotary President Stephen Jakab opened the charity event with a few words to the many people that filled the gymnasium stands.

"Several years back the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged $355 million dollars towards the Global Immunization Campaign if rotary clubs and Rotarians would raise $200 million to match that grant," Jakab said."You can be very proud that the Town of Trumbull has a terrific Rotary Club. Last year we gave over $60,000 back to the community to a variety of causes."

This time, the dodgeball game was to directly support immunization against Polio and the spread of campaigns in developing countries.

"For the last five years, Rotary Clubs all over the world have been trying to raise money to contribute their part towards the End Polio Now campaign," the Rotary President said. " Tonight we are fulfilling Rotary obligation in a global effort in polio."

Jakab went on to say that their club has pledged $9,000 over three years to polio.

As the game warmed up, teams in matching t-shirts came together to strategize an attack on their opponents.

Returning champions The Scrubbin' Bubbles seemed to be the biggest threat amongst participating teams but it was the two St. Vincent's Special Needs teams who took home the title of Best Spirit and Best Uniforms.

Each team was paired up for a best of three match.

Amongst the many teams were The Terminators who took second in the competition and The Lobstermen who landed in third.

Battling it out for the champion title for the second year in a row, The Scrubbin' Bubbles won again.

Each team donated $400 to participate in the event.

All the proceeds from the dodgeball event will be directly contributed towards the global polio effort.
