'Honor the Sacrifice'

This year's Memorial Day theme was created by a Frenchtown School fourth-grader.

First Selectman Timothy M. Herbst along with American Legion Post 141 and VFW Post 10059 have announced the plans for Memorial Day Monday.

The day will start with a ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial on White Plains Road at 10 a.m. Later, the Memorial Day Ceremony on the  Green will begin at 12:30 p.m. honoring all deceased veterans who served in all wars.

The Grand Marshall for the parade, Walter Mallin, will be the guest speaker. Walter is a World War II Army veteran and a Pearl Harbor survivor, Herbst said.

The theme for this year is “Honor the Sacrifice” submitted by Patrick Gasparrini, a fourth grade student at .

"Marching in the parade will be congressional dignitaries and marching bands from around the region including our Golden  Eagle Marching Band, and the and bands," Herbst said in a release. "Many of our elementary schools, civic organizations, fire companies, scouts and sports leagues will provide marching units."

The parade starts at 2 p.m. on Route 111 (in front of Restaurant) and proceeds to Town Hall.

"We are looking forward to another successful parade in which we can honor all our servicemen both past and present for all their sacrifices," Herbst said.

In the event the parade is canceled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made on WICC 600 AM radio.

Also, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes will attend the parade and ceremony in the afternoon.
