Looking For Garbage in Trumbull's Pequonnock Valley (Video)

Grace Episcopal Church volunteers took in nature and removed a Dumpster full of garbage.

Trumbull's volunteers hit the Pequonnock Valley trail starting at Spring Hill Road on a recent Saturday, but came back with more than they brought.

The church volunteers were there to clean up that section of trail, with the blessing of the Conservation Commission, said the Rev. Elsa Worth, priest in charge, and Steve Worth, head of the church's youth group.

Youth group members also participated. The site is next to the Spring Hill Road .

"We gathered a third of a Dumpster full of trash, including a wheelbarrow, a road sign, a car battery, a side table, a drive train and some unidentifiable chunks of sheet metal in only about an hour and a half.  But more than anything else, we picked up hundreds of plastic water bottles, Styrofoam cups and food wrappers," Worth said afterward.

The findings will be reported to "Save the Sound."

"While some of this trash is litter from people using the trail, the majority of it is blown into that area of the river from the adjacent dump and there is far more trash there than we could find yesterday.  The Conservation Commission has designated that area as a problem and more cleanup is needed," Worth added.

"Our youth group plans to return to this spot in the late winter or early spring (or both!) when the weeds have died and the trash down at the river’s edge is both more accessible and visible," she said.

Worth said the volunteers included six middle school youth group members, "two enthusiastic young children" and 15 adults, Worth said.
