The right to die laws hinge more on the fact that there is Little To No Money to be made in SuicideRead More or Assisted Suicide. The prosperity that comes in keeping those who can no longer care for themselves or live a dignified life on their own existing, is so great that there are fortunes at risk. Just as after Sandy Hook the fight became about Gun Rights rather than the fight against Mental Illness. There aren't any lobbyist throwing monies around in Congress for matters on Mental Health. There is no more Right or Wrong only Lucrative and Non-Lucrative. Unfortunately Mr. Banks was not suffering from a terminal illness according to the reports, therefore his actions I'm afraid will only serve to bolster those against assisted suicide. It reinforces their point that it will get out of control leading to those who are merely depressed or unhappy with their current situation's desire to participate. I believe it should be a viable option for those with terminal illnesses and of sound mind. One things for sure, it will be a long hard fight here in Ct. God have mercy on Mr. Banks!

Suicide is a mental illness and this man was mentally ill.
moodus April 18, 2014 at 01:17 pm
I do not think he was mentally ill at all. Maybe some of it was depression (and I do understandRead More that) but we all should have a choice; not to end up drooling, veggie minded, etc. We should be able to choose our own way of going. Yes, many Christians would say we'll go straight to hell if we commit suicide, but if one feels that they have had the life they wanted and feel they've accomplished as much as they CHOOSE to, then fine...let them go. I commend this man.

Any info on the caller?
chuck April 4, 2014 at 09:12 pm
It was John Rowland trying to draw some heat away from himself.
OpportunistWatch April 15, 2014 at 11:36 am
Sue if there was any information on the caller the media would have drawn the conclusion for us andRead More stated the caller had PTSD or mental problems if he/she had an American surname. Ft Hood shootings are perfect examples of how the media creates pictures for our thoughts on who is called a terrorist and who has PTSD even though THEY DID NOT SEE ONE MINUTE OF COMBAT.

FYI-the Mianus river bridge collapsed on O'Neill's watch - HE WAS THE WORST GOVERNOR MALE OR FEMALERead More (Weicker a very close second). O'Neill closed all the tolls because of the West Haven accident which dried up all the highway funding and never spent a penny on infrastructure before, during or after the collapse.
Igor March 25, 2014 at 03:03 pm
Closing the tolls was a dumb ass move. Every state around us has tolls, but Connecticut is soRead More wealthy we don't need any money. We'll just beat our tax payers to death.
Dave D March 27, 2014 at 08:36 am
Stay focused folks... Several troops consolidated dispatch to save money. Now the troops that wereRead More closed at night because troopers were out on patrol, will cost us more tax money so a trooper can stop patrolling and sit inside a nice warm barracks. Real smart move... NOT

Parents of minors even those ages 16-18 should have the right to have their children's hair follicleRead More drug tested. Any law that prohibits the parents to do that needs to be changed. A drug test would have provided proof of drug use and/or abuse - a foundation for knowing or navigating how to try to help the child. No one can assume that this boy was depressed and that was all and therefore he may have used drugs. What if it were the other way around - drugs and the consequential abuse to his internal biochemistry that caused his acts or perhaps symptoms that mimicked or were depression. Not all drug users are depressed. These parents were looking for answers. Having concrete evidence of drug use can break apart the wall of denial, step one.
Still in Stamford April 2, 2014 at 12:45 pm
Connecticut 15, I don't disagree with you. I do think that parents should have the right to haveRead More their children tested. He could have been taking drugs without having underlying depression, but I know from personal experience that drug use often occurs because of depression and that the same symptoms of drug use are also often caused by depression. The majority of drug abusers however, don't commit suicide. He didn't overdose. He died by suicide. That is a mental health issue. So while I do agree that parents should be able to have their children tested, I also think that the mental health issues are just as important in a case like this, because both things likely were factors in this boy's death, and if so, both things need to be treated. I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself better in my first post.

...And I agree 100% With Brandon Stevens about the State Police driving as bad or worse than anyoneRead More elses on the roads... How many times have you had a state cop suddenly appear right up your butt on the highway? so you get over and WHOOSH!!!! off they go like a bat out of hell. I guess its time we all install dash and rearview cameras and video tape these guys, ya know, keep em honest so to speak. they aren't that much $$ and can save your butt in times of trouble too. Is it me or does it seem like now a days, the police seem to treat us all as if we were all common criminals, they no longer protect and serve, they are more or less acting as prison guards and we are all inmates of the state of CT!
Craig Zac March 18, 2014 at 08:25 am
"The Connecticut Department of Transportation will support this ‘Stop Tailgating’Read More project by posting ‘Tailgating Enforcement Zone’ on overhead message boards along designated areas of these highways to remind motorists of this project. " I HATE thos signs, they are a total distraction to drivers, I cant tell you how many times I have almost driven into the next lane while looking up at one of those over head signs and trying to read it... Also, watch next time youre coming up on one when youre still a good distance away from it, watch how many cars hit their breaks when they get close to the sign, I guess its a natural response to hit your breaks when trying to read it, sorta like turning the radio down when your looking at house numbers or street signs, trying to find an address or street! lol

I do not find name calling, as if we are two years old, beneficial in this conversation ie:Read More egotistical ninnies, etc. Whatever happened to being kind with words we use? Also, a little patience, goes a long way. Empathy: Older driver who must drive to get food, Dr. Appts, etc. For those with no patience/empathy for especially the elderly; may you live to be old enough to annoy the "young" driver someday! Then and only then will you understand the struggles elderly residents deal with on a daily basis just to survive. Find some kindness in your heart and words! p.s. there are areas on some of our highways, where if your in the slow lane, you must move into the speed lane to let oncoming ramp traffic merge on: EX: entrance ramp/merging area is appx 300 ft. long and it is only a 2 lane highway..... Old Saybrook (95) heading toward Westbrook/Clinton comes to mind. Also The Merrit Parkway in Wallingford has a really short entrance ramp... There are many more... Just slow down and be kind to one another!

@ Jim.. when you say: "Spending is down but not a lot of support for restoring revenue toRead More levels when things were find and employers had to scramble for employees." Are you saying that we the people, aren't spending as much $$$ as we should be and that's why the economy is so bad? Or do you mean the government is spending less than normal?

I think everyone agrees that 99.9% of all politicians are out of control, out of touch with theRead More people and are breaking down the foundation of our country. The People can fix and purge the self-serving, corrupt, rich, career Politian problem that America has. One of the last constitutional rights that have not been stripped or altered is VOTING. I have heard it and I’m sure you heard it; term limits for elected offices will fix a lot of this country’s problems and a great start on put the country back on track. The people can vote their own term limits in the local, state and federal elections. If we DON’T vote for any sitting politicians and vote for a candidate not in office, regardless of party affiliation. Bring America back to the people through your vote…

Caller had a SPANISH accent - 99% I'll bet they are operating from PR. They sure know how toRead More manipulate our system very well. We can't even track a drivers license from that protectorate. If you say anything about the untraceable nature of PR, you are dubbed a racist and some bleeding heart Hartford agency will try and sue you. Sick but this is a BIG problem. Oh I forgot, they are the on the front line of our military so we call it a protectorate. I hope they lock this predator up for a longtime.

It's not my skills I'm worried about, it's the other driver's skills. The driver who thinks hisRead More skills are better than they actually are. You can tell those. The ones that weave in and out of traffic missing your bumper by 6 inches. I also have driven I95 for over 35 years, and I have seen more than I care too. Some I get pissed off, and sometimes I can't help laugh at some of the bonehead moves. Well whichever a person drive I hope they arrive home safely.

Are we done with this discussion yet? I hate tailgaters, I drive over the speed limit (about 10Read More mph) and I stay off I95 & the Merritt...I do not talk on the phone while driving either - I figure my JOB at that moment is driving...and watching for crazies out there WHO DON'T CARE...

Blockbuster headline, milquetoast article and no comments. Weird...so I googled the story. ItsRead More about 1,000 times worse than I expected. We have our own mini Penn State scandal right in town. Plus a civic minded kid damaged by a psycho. Where's the outrage? People were going bonkers here when Rent was cancelled. At least post a comment this stinks. The family of the victim likely wants privacy, but I'd hate for her parents to look at the Patch and think no one cares their daughter was r@ped.
LovesTrumbull February 27, 2014 at 08:46 am
@Jim Sullivan, I understand your response to the lack of response; however let this family handleRead More this and give them the privacy they want. This is a huge mess and in time will be all over the tabloids. Don't judge the lack of comments to the outrage of the residents of Trumbull.

Igor, whos making BS excuses? I clean off my car! Maybe people like you would feel safer if youRead More stay off the roads in winter... im sorry this is New England, we get snow, we get ice and its something you have to deal with. if you are so scared of a piece of ice or snow, move to florida!
Craig Zac February 27, 2014 at 08:33 am
Maybe we should all just call the state and town cops each and every time we see a car withRead More ANYTHING tied to its roof or sticking out of the trunk, any time we see a truck with anything tied to its bed or in its bed or anytime we see anyone towing an open trailer full of stuff like landscaping tools or if they are moving furniture or hauling anything... If we can get fined because snow or ice MIGHT fly off and hit a car, then it should be against the law for ANYTHING that might fly off of a car, truck or, trailer and hit a car. If we are going to be safe, lets be safe ALL the way around! W have all see it, the car with the matress on the roof or this one.... cars with Christmas trees tied to the roof... now That's dangerous! Or trucks filled with branches so high they are almost hitting the phone wires or so packed they are actually hanging out the back and touching the pavement... trailers full of shovels, barrels, lawn equipment... dump trucks full of dirt or rocks that is like driving behind a sand blaster... cars with lumber on the roof, trucks and vans with pipes on top... and you all are worried about some snow or ice?
Dom February 27, 2014 at 09:20 am
If you properly secure the snow to your vehicle I'd be happy for you to drive around with it. YouRead More can't tie down snow due to it's physical properties, but you are more than welcome to keep it in your trunk.

Some people just rely on their membership in community clubs and abuse the titles they are given inRead More municipal departments. Some people treat their employees like trash and get away with it because the Club protects them. Some people skim money off the top of the grant pot and hide it by cutting their employees hours but having them do the same work. Some people just behave poorly.

Gee...I guess with all this snow the sign on the Town Green won't get changed for a few more months.Read More You know...the one touting the Senior Center Bazaar held Halloween weekend of 2013. The one visitors see when driving up Maple Street. Maybe we could just leave it up til the 2014 Bazaar? Geez....somebody give me the key. I'll change the damn sign. I'll at least advertise the Kerry Boys in July. That's always a given....Is there a beautification committee or something here that checks on these things??
