Cadets Roll Over McMahon

The undefeated boys basketball team enjoyed a laugher Friday, rolling to a 91-49 victory over McMahon in an FCIAC mismatch.
James Jennings scored 17 points and Patrick Hopkins added 16 in the Cadets' well-balanced attack. Quincy McKnight and Timajh Parker each added a dozen for St. Joseph.

In the first half, the Cadets' offense was unstoppable againt the defenseless Senators as St. Joseph raced to a 57-25 halftime lead.
It was a bit better in the second half, when St. Joseph only outscored McMahon 34-24 with the outcome of the game no longer in doubt.

St. Joseph improved to 16-0 overall and 14-0 in the FCIAC.
Darkym Stroud scored 12 points to pace McMahon, which dropped to 2-14 and 2-12.
Parker also grabbed 11 rebounds for St. Joseph while Jennings and McKnight each handed out six assists.

In a battle of teams looking to stay in the FCIAC boys basketball playoff race, Trumbull defeated Staples 65-60 in Westport on Friday.
Mike Yerina scored 19 points to lead the Eagles, who improved to 8-8 overall and 7-7 in the FCIAC. The loss left Staples with the same records.
Sam Turner scored 16 pointsa and Travis Fonseca added 15 for Trumbull, which rebounded from Tuesday's 66-41 loss to Ridgefield.
Mike Argosh (24) and Pete Rankowitz (17) combined for 41 of Staples' points. Argosh also had four rebounds and six steals. Jimson Lima grabbed six boards for Trumbull.
Staples jumped out to a 21-16 lead after the first quarter, but Trumbull answered with a 17-10 spurt in the second period to grab a 33-31 advantage at the break.
The Eagles then outscored Staples 14-12 in the third period to extend their lead to 47-43 entering the final stanza.
With two weeks left in the regular season, Trumbull and Staples each find themselves one game out of a playoff spot.

The Trumbull girls basketball team damaged the playoff hopes of Staples with a 54-33 victory over the Wreckers on Friday.
Alexa Pfohl scored 12 points for the Eagles, who improved to 16-2 overall and 14-2 in the FCIAC in advance of Monday's showdown with undefeated Danbury, which could be a preview of the FCIAC championship game.
Joyce Woolen and Amanda Pfohl each added 10 points for Trumbull, which visits undefeated Danbury on Monday.
Jess Coelho scored 20 points for Staples, but didn't get much help as the rest of her teammates combined for just 13 points.
Staples dropped to 10-8 and 9-7, falling into a ninth-place tie with Darien, which lost to Stamford on Friday.
Fairfield Warde and Stamford are tied for seventh at 10-6 in conference play with only two games remaining in the regular season.

Nancy Stablein scored 23 points Jenn Vasquez added 17 Friday, leading the St. Joseph girls basketball team to a 63-44 victory over McMahon on Friday.
The Cadets, who are in first place in the FCIAC East, improved to 15-3 overall and 13-3 in conference play.
St. Joseph opened a 13-8 lead after the first quarter before McMahon closed within 28-26 at the half, but the Cadets took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Senators 17-8 to extend their margin to 45-34.
Jazmin Taylor scored 12 points to lead McMahon, which dropped to 3-15 and 3-13. Taylor and Aleigh Fitzpatrick (eight points) each had 10 rebounds for the Senators.

Jake Granito scored two goals Friday as the New Canaan boys hockey team posted a 4-1 victory over Trumbull at the Darien Ice Rink.
Harry Stanton and Puck Richardson also tallied for the Rams, who improved to 10-6-1.
A.J. DiMasi had the lone goal for Trumbull, which dropped to 10-7.
New Canaan took a 2-1 lead after two periods, then put away the contest with a pair of goals in the final period.
Matt Paolini made 33 saves for the Eagles while Chris Koennecke stopped 15 shots for the Rams.

Nina Danforth scored three goals and Erin Chapman added a pair Saturday, leading the Staples-Trumbull girls hockey team to an 8-1 victory over Stamford.
Lindsay Furman, Rebecca Buck and Jessie Lapisto also scored for the Wreckers while Ariel Shaulson had the only goal for Stamford.
Staples-Trumbull improved to 5-13.
