Kids Love Running Too!

One thing I'm passionate about is kids and exercise. Yes I train adults to run, yes I'm a personal trainer, but what really gives me pleasure is seeing kids active, especially running, setting obtainable goals then achieving them, to know it's not about the winning but just doing your best and having fun in the meantime.
I see so many schools cutting back on PE, I just don't understand. Isn't it just healthy and fun to want to play sports, competitive or non? To just be active after sitting in a classroom all day then to home and sit and do homework? Then perhaps do more sitting whilst reading, watching tv, playing video games etc? When do they jump, run, hop, skip, play?!?! Im not saying that all children are sedentary but there is a reason why since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled.(Data from: National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey). The American Heart Association also points out that: inactive kids usually grow to become inactive adults and low levels of physical activity could lead up to future health problems like obesity and heart disease. They also list the health benefits of PE like running games such as reducing the risk of developing diabetes; developing stronger bones; controlling weight, and my favorite…boosting overall happiness. In all the kids programs I have coached I have noticed boosts in self esteem, more confidence, and a healthier sense of self. So, what am I missing? When did our kids become so inactive? Lets make it more of a priority to get out with our kids, take a hike, play tag or catch, go bike riding or sledding, skiing or ice skating…there are so many options rather than the alternative! Also, you are your children's biggest role models, if they see you active it may inspire them. So, be active and spend time with your kids…win win!
