Trumbull Neighborhood Flooded by Water Main

But no one had to be evacuated from their homes near Madison Middle School.

Aquarion crews continue to finish repairs to a 24-inch water main that burst at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday near Madison Middle School.

The water flow was stopped by 3 a.m. Wednesday but by then water had pooled to four to five feet deep in some areas, said Long Hill Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Alex Rauso. Nearby homes on Redcoat Lane, Alpine Road and Driftwood Lane were threatened and several inches of water flowed into some basements.

The school did not take on water, he added.

No one had to be evacuated but firefighters used an inflatable boat, Rauso said.

Long Hill firefighters worked in 25-degree temperatures for several hours, as did Trumbull Public Works crews. The leaf piles waiting for pickup were pushed into street and had to be cleared from the storm drains, Rauso said.

As much as 3 million gallons of water may have flowed out, about 10,000 gallons at a time, he estimated.

The deputy chief said all the crews did an “amazing” job.

Two engines and a ladder truck responded to the call.
