Trumbull GOP, Dems Convene Tuesday Night

Trumbull's GOP and Democrats will both pick their slates tonight at 7 p.m.

The GOP convention is at the Tashua Knolls Restaurant and the Democrats will meet at the school district offices, 6254 Main St.

The GOP is expected to endorse First Selectman Tim Herbst for re-election. Herbst has already announced his candidacy.

The democratic candidate for first selectman has been shrouded in mystery. One democrat, Andy Palo, announced an exploratory committee but did not specify for for which office.

Herbst, an attorney, is seeking a third term. He defeated long-time incumbent Ray Baldwin Jr. in 2009 and Town Councilwoman Mary Beth Thornton in 2011.

This year's election is particularly significant because it is the first use of four voting districts in a municipal election. Critics of the new districts say it reduces the number of minority seats on the Town Council, potentially leading to four minority seats and 17 for the majority.
