Cadets Hockey Over Trinity

Christian Keator scored the tiebreaking goal on the power play just 13 seconds into the third period Saturday as the boys hockey team held off upset-minded Trinity Catholic 2-1 in the FCIAC's tier one playoffs at the Terry Conners Rink.

Mark Laoue gave the Cadets 1-0 lead 4 1/2 minutes into the second period before the Crusaders tied it on Jamey Shea's power-play goal with four minutes remaining in the second.

Freshman goaltender Kyle Odierno kept Trinity Catholic in the game with 34 saves while Ron Johnson stopped 23 shots for St. Joseph.

The Cadets improved to 14-7 and will take on No. 2 seed Ridgefield (bye in the first round) in the semifinals on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Terry Conners.

Trinity Catholic, which started 2-10, will take a 9-12 record into the state tournament.

In Saturday's other first-round game, New Canaan routed Wilton 9-2 to set up a semifinal showdown against top seed Darien at 6 p.m. at Terry Conners.

The Trumbull High School boys hockey team advanced to the finals of the FCIAC's tier II playoffs with a 3-1 win over Fairfield on Friday.

Brendan Strobel, Michael Ahearn, Brandon Elbert scored for the Eagles, who improved to 12-9 and will face Westhill in the tier II final next Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.

Kevin Robinson had the lone goal for Fairfield, which dropped to 9-12.

Matt Paolini made 22 saves for Trumbull while Conner Frawley stopped 13 shots for Fairfield.

Trumbull's Ben Anderson finished second in the 138-pound weight class on Saturdat in the state Open wrestling championships in New Haven and qualified for next weekend's New England championships in Providence, R.I.

After a bye in the first round, Anderson defeated Craig Sassu of Bristol Eastern 9-0 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Anderson shut out Terryville's Avery Ellegard, 4-0.

Anderson then defeated Daniel Hecker of Glastonbury 9-4 in the semifinals before losing to Griswold's Brandon Walsh 9-2 in the finals.

The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the New England championships.

St. Joseph's Nancy Stablein and Trumbull's Victoria Pfohl were named to the all-FCIAC first team. Stablein suffered a torn ACL in the Cadets' loss to Stamford in the FCIAC quarterfinals and is lost for the season.

Named to the second team were Wilton's Casey Pearsall and Amy Fulton, Norwalk's Emma Oyomba, Darien's Meg Marren, Warde's Jamera Fountain, Trinity Catholic's Ali Palma, Staples' Erica Stein and Danbury's Rachel Gartner.

Named to the first team were: Danbury's Casey Smith, St. Joseph's Nancy Stablein, Trinity Catholic's Mackenzie Griffin, New Canana's Sarah Mannelly, Stamford's Kelsey Cognetta, Staples' Jess Coelho and Trumbull's Victoria Pfohl.
